Filling a hole in the market usually makes for one smart business idea. Jennifer took her desire for healthier skin products, mixed it with a dash of baby-bump inspiration, and voila! Her business was born. Read on for how she pursued it…
What business did you start up?
I started a skin care company called Created Pure. We use recognizable and wholesome ingredients like avocado oil, olive butter, beeswax, and French green clay to care for your skin in the most natural way, free from harmful chemicals. Created Pure’s mission is to give you effective and affordable skin care products with pure ingredients–as close as possible to their natural form.
What motivated you to do it?
When I was trying to get pregnant with my daughter, I wanted to be as healthy as possible. I could not find products on the market that were as effective, affordable, and chemical-free as I wanted, so I decided to create my own. Read more

Have you heard of Milkin’ Cookies yet? Mom-tested and doctor-approved, find out why these two entrepreneurs decided to launch the very first lactation treat.
What business did you start up?
My business partner and I were both practicing physicians struggling to provide breast milk for our babies. We decided to research foods that increased breast milk supply and then put as many as we could into a cookie. The first batch was truly awful, but we finally perfected the recipe, and Milkin’ Cookies were born. Our delicious, individually packaged lactation cookies help boost breast milk supply for nursing moms. They’re full of wholesome ingredients and contain no medication or preservatives.
What motivated you to do it?
My son was a preemie, and I struggled to provide breast milk for him. I’d tried medicines, herbs, and even teas with little to no response. I knew that there had to be a better solution, so with the help of a colleague who was struggling, too, we came up with Milkin’ Cookies. Read more

If you had to give a piece of advice to a girlfriend that was thinking about starting her own small business, what would that be?
I’d ask her to sell me on her idea. Then I’d tell her to go out and find friends, family and strangers and pitch her product or service to them. My first piece of advice for anyone is to figure out whether there’s a market for what they’re selling. Too many people spend far too much time planning, thinking, planning, waiting, wondering if it’s the right time, creating a laundry list of worries, and then planning some more. I’ve seen a lot of entrepreneurs spend upwards of 2 years prepping their product launch only to find out, post-launch, that no one is interested in buying it. I’m very much a dive-in-first-and-then-plan kinda gal, and since it’s worked for me three times, I’m confident it’s going to work for someone else, too.
What small business resources can you not live without?
Twitter. And Tadalist. And LessAccounting.com. And Google Docs. And WordPress. And Evernote. And Skype. And most importantly, My First Ticonderoga #2 pencils.”
